NoGoD – Ao no Daichi and Midori no Kaze Reviews

NOTE: I’m not including Dou, Tsubasa and Yakusoku no Chi in this review. I will tackle them in the Gokusaishiki review.

Time for something a little different folks. I’m going to tackle all the unused B-sides from the last two singles NoGoD put out and place them in order from best to worst. Is this difficult? Maybe, but I consulted the Kavki Godz in order to get an accurate representation of what “suckage” actually is.

Now to start. This should actually be obvious but in case it isn’t it’s Seshuuka. This is easily the hardest thing they’ve released since Mugen Kyou. It’s a great song, but sadly it doesn’t fit in the soundscape of the Midori no Kaze single. It also feels like they tried to channel some Tsumibatsu Egoist in this single, and it’s never good for a band to go back and try to redo things. If it’s done it’s done and it should stay done. But Seshuuka, even though it doesn’t fit musically, fits conceptually (I think the single has to do with finding a new place, a new land or something like that) and even though it’s out of place it still kicks mucho ass. Easily the best song they’ve released from this campaign.

I actually rank Haten Daishishi higher than Kijin Fukanshou only because of the funky time signatures. Seshuuka edges them out only by a bit but both of these songs are equally as good. In my opinion, they picked my three least favorite songs to stick on Gokusaishiki but Kijin Fukanshou gets shoved to the bottom only because of the weak poppy parts. Go hard or go soft, but go middle and you flop like beef jerky Fukanshou <_<. Daishishi is also a good reminder of what NoGoD can do when they mix pop and rock and it’s a damn good song. I don’t mind listening to Haten Daishishi on repeat.

The other three songs are just OK. Really quickly: Tsubasa’s stopping and starting kills the summery vibe, Dou is generic oshare-kei at it’s most generic yet accessible, Yakusoku no Chi is an OK ballad but it runs a bit too long for replay value to be high on my list. All three snag about a 3.5 on my ratings, except for Yakusoku no Chi. That gets a four.
