Now I’m afraid I haven’t thought on the singles as much as I should have but I’d like to say something. I shall concede to eru’s statements concerning Zesshoku on Gokusaishiki.

No, I wasn’t influenced by her, but I just came around to liking the contrast between the dark verse and the poppy chorus. It only works in that song though (still trying to get used to Circus though) so my rating of that song jumps up to a perfect 10. That would leave Gokusaishiki at a square 4 IIRC.

Sometime this weekend all the reviews I put in the posts section will be lengthened a little and moved over to the side for their own pages.

So I’ll begin wiht Hikari no Rock by Sambomaster. TEH RIFFZ ARE SO ALIEN! No, really, this is the catchy, upbeat sort of stuff that Amorias listens to so…oh god…..the vocals. OK, so it’s no ROID IN SHADOW but I’m not used to them I guess. Amorias, why do all your vocalists bar Tatsurou sound exactly the same? Well, let’s just say high-pitched guy who thinks he’s a baritone and overextends his vocal range ever so slightly.

And the choruses are spit out hurricane style in that ever so original way that YUI stole…OK So I’m being a bit of an ass but there’s really nothing wrong with this song. Guess it’s just not my style but if I can stand it and it’s outside my style than it’s gotta be decent at average. The unoriginal chorus (in terms of how it’s sung) isn’t winning anything in my book. Why do choruses always mess up a song?

Oh, he started screaming….it really doesn’t suit your voice sir. The last chorus also has a bit more screaming in it and it sounds like he’s got phlegm stuck in his throat. Amorias, I need to take you to the land of music….

*stops outside Kyuutai land and pulls a cop-out*

“Call this song Fuzz + psychedelic techno effects. Oz feels like the counterpart to Fuzz and it shares much in common with that song, including the attitude-driven intro. Oz immediately got a 10 from me the minute the opening riff went on, and the rest of this song went on to make it sexplox. The best part of this song is that, much like Fuzz, the chorus doesn’t lose steam. It doesn’t suddenly change from dark to light or angsty to sugary-sweet. It keeps the flow and the vibe and makes this song better. It also helps that Miya’s solo comes right after. This is definitely one of the highlights of Kyuutai.”

What can I say that hasn’t been said again? Oh, that Amorias failed to realize this album was released and that he likes OZ better than FUZZ.

Next on our tour of music Amorias likes would be exDream by Myuji. Bar the low quality on my audio but this song is kick-ass. It was used for the theme on the anime X and you can hear the English references throughout. This is what I call a typical Amorias song: distinguishable chorus (either due to the annoyance factor, the uninspiring factor, or in this case, the ORIGINAL factor) and softer verses. But this song is a bit different because….it has a downtuned section. Me likey downtuned stuff a little bit too much….but it fits with the song.

I wish I could find more stuff by this guy too…

Melissa was Amoria’s jam for a good minute or so. It was used as the opener to the widely overrated celebrated anime Full Metal Alchemist and I can just say that this song gets stuck in your head….because it’s so fucking annoying. And it’s just the chorus….you know that thing you hear within the first five seconds. This is definitely the poppiest tune that I’ve talked about so far and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, I can actually stand the verses. It’s just that chorus that makes me burst a blood vessel. The instrumentation also doesn’t suffer from “American syndrome”, which is what I use to refer to music that feels like it’s missing something in the background.

I’m about to do a remix that omits the chorus >.> HONESTLY! The bass fun that’s a “solo” also is pretty cool and if nothing, Porno Graffitti know how to mix acoustic and bass and not make it abrasive (read: Gazette’s REGRET). Good job guys. Just work on your choruses please (and don’t keep the finagling for the FADE OUT ;_;)

DRASTIC MY SOUL is the ending theme song for the anime s-CRY-ed (for the life of me I will never find two people that pronounce it the same way). Mikio Sakai wrote this and the song starts out deceptive. I swear it goes through like three different styles in ten seconds before he jumps in and starts up with the singing. I prepared myself for an annoying singer that would try to overextend his reach but he stays comfortable in the lower range so I’m OK with that. Just waiting until the chorus…

Once again, usual Amorias song….the chorus fits into a mix of two and three from what I described before, but it’s no Melissa or Hikari no Rock. And that’s a good thing. It certainly sounded more epic late at night in condensed form though. The “solo” (I use that loosely) also shows some instrumentation, but I wish it was just a bit louder. The only thing that ruins this song is the classic “step up” method that gives a song more oomph but really causes me to just turn it off. A clever beginning is just as good as a clever ending.

I BELIEVE IN DRASTIC MY SOUL also is the worst usage of English ever.

Now if Morning Musume would dance to Koi no Megalover my life would be complete. The beginning completely betrays MtH songwriting structure but when it blasts into the familiar heavy rock territory it’s obvious that this song is going to kick ass. Too bad the song repeats a second time but it just takes away a little. At least Ryo-kun’s verse is a little different the second time around and Ue SINGS!

Ichirin no Hana is also Greg’s jam, but I stole it when he was having secksual relations with “that woman”. It’s far and away one of the best songs old Haikara ever did so I like it. And Maki (poor Maki…) does some singing in this song that blows away the rest of that…album they call Gouon Progressive. This would be the song to get anyone into Haikara and if I could point out any flaws in this song it would be Yusuke and his verses. But that’s minor stuff really; it’s fine the way it is. The Huge Hollow remix my friend Henry played for us is techno bliss.

Kyuuseishu -Messiah- is one of those few Janne Da Arc songs I like (along with Tsumetai Kagerou, the first song I ever heard by them). IDK why I like it so. The guitars carry that twang that annoys me and the singer does something that does not please me but I guess it’s just the pure riffage that works in my favor. Since I’m getting tired (and I just came buckets) here’s the link which I slaved over to bring you.

I talked about muddy cult before so I’ll now talk about Nega’s latest releases Dig and Ill. Dig is definitely the better of the two, being more inventive and creative, but the inclusion of an almost instrumental-like track at the beginning of a THREE TRACK single begs me to ask whether any effort was put into these releases. Dig provides some relief with the final song, guilt trip, climaxing into something worth hearing. idle, the other “song” on the release, starts out with some heavy riffs just to settle back into some softer music. I couldn’t really pay attention after that because it sounds like they just smashed the two together. There was no flow from soft to hard and the disc felt ambivalent. Ill on the other hand sounds like a rip off of some generic heavy metal band with overtly sexual lyrics. idiot beauty sounds like it’s channeling some GazettE and failing miserably, labia is good for the lulz but as a song fails worse than idiot beauty, and lust[er] appears to be just a decent track, but that can’t save the single. I recommend you get neither but if you must get one get Dig.

I never did review Guren or Leech by the GazettE so I’ll do it now. Starting off with Guren….I hate this song. Cassis is still the best ballad they’ve ever done and it sounds like this mixed with Bath Room (from their NIL album). I hate this song not because it’s bad, but because it sounds too stale. Another thing that bothers me with Guren is that the pace of the song is a lot softer than the guitars, and they seem to overpower at parts, especially around the solo and near the end. Guren is saved by the message of the song and the way Ruki sings it, although I wish there was a bit more emotion in it as a whole. Kugutsue sounds like a track that was left off of Stacked Rubbish, and if it were to be on that album it would sound a whole lot better than some of the trash that was there. Still riff laden, still full of screams, still drenched in the discordant female backvocals that make a good GazettE fan want to rip their hair out…but it works. The listener needs a pick me up after the title track and although this track does that, and does it well, in the end it doesn’t end up as anything more than a good hard rock song. And who can ask for anything more than that? The true gem of this single comes on the Auditory Impression, Kyomu no Owari Hakozume no Mokushi. If you needed one song to encompass all that the GazettE is, it would be this song. I can’t even describe how this song is, so just listen to the link at the bottom and know that I like this song very very much.

Guren ends up with a 7/10, mostly because of the last track. The Optical Impression gets a 5.

LEECH is what I was looking forward to as their next single. In a way, it resembles Kugutsue in having female backvocals and screams and being an overly brash track but this song has more direction and that “spark” that makes it all work. I place this single song above Guren but not by much because I think Distress and Coma fits slightly over this song. DISTORTED DAYTIME is an excellent B-Side that complements the entire feel of this single and honestly this is where the single should have stopped. But in the name of persistence there’s HOLE, which doesn’t FIT. Sure, it’s a nice riff and some good singing but to me it feels like half a song. Had it gone on for 30 more seconds with some definite closure and another verse I would have liked it but HOLE feels unfinished and unsatisfying. For once I’ll recommend the Optical Impression because you get the awesome music video for LEECH instead of the subpar HOLE.

This is said awesome video.

Auditory Impression gets a 6. Optical Impression gets an 8.

I promised to talk about Ambrozia so here it is. The first track is an instrumental that moves quickly into the second track “suckin’ on a lollipop”. IMO they should have just cut it out but w/e. suckin on a lollipop isn’t my favorite track on here, and the chorus is either love it or hate it so everyone has a different opinion. Personally I find the chorus bland and not irritating and it kills the whole badass feel of the song. Luckily the next two songs are more than awesome to make up for this bump. CamelliA is one of those songs where you must sing along and Alejandro is deceptive in nature with it’s Hispanic influenced beginning and parts. The ballad really fails to keep my attention but the end of [Delusion] ends this EP off with a bang. Overall, a good EP to listen to just in case you need to get into Lycaon.

And so it gets a 7.

Kyousouroku by Anti Feminism has gotten a lot of attention on my player recently and for good reason: it’s a damn good album. 27 tracks in all, but most of them fly by since they’re about a minute long. It’s a compliation album and a right bitch to find and download but you’ll love it once you have it. Standout tracks include “Shakai”, “Nationalism”, “STREET FIGHTING MUCH”, “Sperm”, “Go Go Anti Feminism”, and BAD BOY A, but if you like what you hear you might as well sit down and give this entire album a proper listen. Note that if you don’t like visceral punk rock influenced from the 90′s you’re not going to like this album.

Kyousouroku gets an 8 as well, because I hate filler tracks with a passion.

And like my friend said, there are 10 better things to do to a naked girl strapped down on a chair than to cut her viscera.

Distress and Coma….the title track has me falling to pieces and reminds me most of their older days. Although the chorus is repeated once too often and the background singing drives a spike into my eye, the song is strong and beautiful enough to compensate. Headache Man initially gave me a headache, but as time wore on it grew on me. It’s not one of my favorite tracks but the part where Ruki’s voice is slightly distorted as he sings a proper voice is my favorite part of the song. Without a Trace….let’s just say this is the one time I suggest you actually buy the Optical Impression instead. I’ve heard that it sounds most like Chizuru, but the song is bland and boring and offers nothing.

HYDE’s new compilation album HYDE is out, and if you’ve been collecting all of his stuff up to this point you can effectively just skip this collection unless you MUST have everything he’s ever released. If you’re fairly new to HYDE, then this is the perfect place to start. It comprises of tracks from all of his releases I believe and does a good job at it.

Journey through the Decade is Gackt’s latest single, and to me the weakest after Ghost and Jesus. It tries to emulate Jesus but doesn’t carry the same energy that that track had, so it ends up just being a regular Gackt-y song. The kicker is that Gackt didn’t even WRITE this song, so it feels even less like him. At least it’s a good theme for Kamen Rider Decade. The two additional tracks are just instrumental: one emulating the feeling of GHOST and the other one harkening back to his old MOON days. Nice tracks, but having just one actual track on the single kills it for me.

I’m downloading Ambrozia now, so when I give it a proper listen I’ll review it PROPERLY. I just needed to get these few off my mind right now. Life sucks so yeah, I haven’t been able to jump on as much as I wanted to.
